Childhood Trauma
The kinds of trauma experienced by children
is generally not a one time event such as a
natural disaster or accident. Rather, it is
traumatic experiences which are prolonged
and repeated, interpersonal in nature,
intentional, and may endure over an
extensive period of time. This includes sexual
abuse or incest, sexual exploitation, physical
abuse, severe neglect and emotional abuse,
exposure to and witnessing of violence, multiple
abandonments, and unexpected traumatic
losses. Trauma is often the central issue for
people with mental health problems, substance
abuse problems, or co-occurring disorders.
Most importantly, people can and do recover
from the effects of trauma if they receive the
right services and support.
Trauma Informed Care
Often times, youth enter into residential
treatment due to behavioral and emotional
instabilities that have resulted in unsuccessful
interactions with society. Many facilities focus
on the remediation of these behaviors as the
goal of treatment. At Hermitage Hall, we
view these interactions as symptoms of an
underlying issue. Trauma Informed Care
provides for an environment and specialized
services that are responsive to the unique
needs of trauma survivors. Emphasis is
placed on "what has happened to the child"
rather than "what is wrong with the child." A
deep understanding of survivors and their
symptoms in the context of their life
experiences guides our care.
Person Centered Planning
Individualized treatment plans are developed
in full partnership with our residents. Goals and
objectives are outcome based and developed
with the youth's unique strengths, needs,
abilities, and preferences in mind. Treatment
planning is a collaborative process that involves
the youth, her guardian, and referral source.
Trauma Specific Treatment
Trauma Specific Treatment begins with a
thorough evaluation. Interventions are
designed to specifically address the
consequences of the trauma and facilitate the
healing process. Trauma Informed Treatment
is consumer driven and aims to restore a sense
of safety, power, control, and hope. All
interventions are tailored to the youth with
considerations of their specific needs, abilities,
and cognitive development. Specific modalities
commonly utilized may include but are not limited to:
- Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
(TF-CBT)
- Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing
(EMDR)
- Dialectical Behavior Therapy
- Expressive and Art Therapy
- Play Therapy
